Wiemy, że kilka ważnych numerów zostało pominiętych, ale zostawiamy sobie otwartą furtkę, na wypadek, gdyby Dave z kolegami w końcu przyjechali do Polski z koncertem i znów musielibyśmy pisać o najlepszych piosenkach Foo Fighters 😉 „The Pretender” Zaczynamy z grubej rury, czyli bezapelacyjnie najlepszej piosenki Foo Fighters. Wszystko w tym numerze jest bezbłędne. Mocna, wyrazista perkusja, soczyste riffy, pełen emocji wokal, potężne brzmienie (tu brawa dla Gila Nortona, który wcześniej pomagał chociażby Pixies), ciekawa kompozycja. Najlepsza jest jednak dramaturgia. „The Pretender” kapitalnie się „rozrasta”, a Grohl i spółka genialnie potrafią budować napięcie. Niby prosty zabieg z wyciszonym, „szarpanym” przejściem, a robi dla piosenki naprawdę wiele. I proszę mi wierzyć, kto nie słyszał tego utworu na żywo, może czuć się niespełniony. Kawałek pierwotnie nosił tytuł „Silver Heart”. Początkowo też numer był znacznie wolniejszy. Zdaniem Dave’a jest w tej kompozycji nutka, hmmm… Chucka Berry’ego. Muzyk przyznał też, że popularna piosenka z „Ulicy Sezamkowej”, „One of These Things is not Like the Others”, mogła podświadomie zainspirować go do napisania „The Pretender”. Kapitalny i okrutnie prosty teledysk, w którym występuje oddział prewencji, znakomicie koresponduje z dynamiką nagrania. „Big Me” Choć debiutancką płytę Dave Grohl nagrywał w zasadzie sam (pomagał mu jedynie Greg Dulli z The Afghan Whigs, grający na gitarze), do promocji zaangażowany został już cały zespół. „Big Me” było wyraźnym znakiem, że Foo Fighters to nie Nirvana. To inny kaliber, inna estetyka. Numer w mocno kalifornijskim, mięciutkim stylu. Delikatny, rozbujany, pogodny. Całości dopełnia zabawny klip, będący parodią popularnej w latach 90. reklamy mentosów. Wideo nakręcono w Sydney. Pomysłodawcą i reżyserem był Jesse Peretz. – Nie było łatwo dopasować teledysk do piosenki, która jest ironiczna i niemożliwe, cukierkowo popowa – opowiadał frontman. – Chcieliśmy uniknąć czegoś pretensjonalnego. Chcieliśmy się po prostu z siebie ponabijać. Humor i dystans do siebie to znaki rozpoznawcze Foo Fighters. „Dear Rosemary” To jedna z piosenek Foo Fighters, która przyprawia o dreszcze i wzrusza. Fajnie jest, kiedy Dave się tak całymi bebechami wydziera. „Skin And Bones” „Skin And Bones” jest kompletnym przeciwieństwem „Free Me” – „agresywność zero”. Szczególnie w proponowanej przeze mnie edycji unplugged. Piosenka oryginalnie pojawiła się na stronie B singla „DOA” (o nim będzie trochę niżej), znacznie piękniej prezentuje się jednak w wersji z akustycznego koncertu, który odbył się w Pantages Theater w Los Angeles. Utwór pachnący folkiem, z lekkim przytupem, wyczesanymi, ciut psychodelicznymi klawiszami, zawianym akordeonem i absolutnym szaleństwem w finale. „Stacked Actors” Drugi numer, który w wydaniu koncertowym zjada wersję studyjną i oblizuje się ze smakiem. Kiedy posłuchamy piosenki z albumu „There Is Nothing Left to Lose”, dostaniemy owszem, fajny i ciekawy utwór. Trochę garażowy, trochę plażowy. Ze sporą dawką energii, odpowiednią ilością brudu oraz mile zaskakującymi „hawajskimi” smaczkami. Całość nerwowa, roztrzęsiona. W opcji live co prawda produkcyjnych detali brak, ale jest za to potężna energia i podrasowany kontrast między fragmentami garażowymi i plażowymi. Grohl napisał numer w rodzinnej Wirginii, do której na jakiś czas wrócił po dłuższym pobycie w Hollywood. Nie jest to zapewne kanon Foo Fighters, ale ładna, pełna emocji piosenka. „DOA” Kolejny z wielu fantastycznych teledysków Foo Fighters oraz genialny w swej prostocie patent z wirującym pokojem. Pomysłodawcą i reżyserem jest Mike Palmieri (znany chociażby z „Closest Thing To Heaven” Tears For Fears). W wideo widzimy muzyków w niewielkim pomieszczeniu, które stopniowo obraca się o 360 stopni. W ten sposób przez połowę utworu muzycy znajdują się do góry nogami. Trzeba tu zaznaczyć, że efekt, który podziwiamy nie jest dziełem speców od animacji komputerowej. – Musieliśmy zrobić 15 ujęć wewnątrz pokoju – opowiadał Palmieri. – Nikt nie zwymiotował, ale było im naprawdę niedobrze. To nerwowe, szarpane a zarazem soczyste granie. Poza tym mamy do czynienia z klasycznym Foo Fighters w swym cięższym wcieleniu. Trochę przebojowym, trochę wściekłym. Skondensowanym brzmieniowo i melodyjnym. Do skakania i chóralnego śpiewania. Numer pierwotnie był instrumentalny i nim stał się takim, jakim go znamy, przeszedł wiele zmian. Kawałek został nagrodzony Grammy i spędził 10 kolejnych tygodni na 1. miejscu notowania Hot Modern Rock Tracks. „Best of You” Panie i panowie, chwytajcie za pióro i kałamarz, i piszcie płynące prosto z serca podziękowania dla menedżera Foo Fighters.
